What is FIRE?
Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) is a financial planning approach focused on building enough assets to support your living expenses without depending entirely on employment income.
What is FIRE Corpus?
The estimated total investment portfolio needed at retirement so that withdrawals can cover your living expenses for the rest of your life, under your chosen assumptions.
What is Safe Withdrawal Rate?
The percentage of your retirement corpus you plan to withdraw in the first year of retirement, adjusted for inflation in later years. It is not universally "safe" - the outcome depends on your assumptions, asset allocation, inflation, taxes, longevity and market performance.
What is Coast FIRE?
Having enough invested today that, left to grow with no further contributions, your portfolio could potentially reach your required retirement corpus by your target retirement age.
Lean FIRE, Regular FIRE and Fat FIRE?
These describe different retirement lifestyle levels based on the annual expenses you plan to support - lower for Lean FIRE, moderate for Regular FIRE, and higher for Fat FIRE.
Pre-retirement vs post-retirement return?
Pre-retirement return is the assumed growth rate of your investments while you are still contributing. Post-retirement return is the assumed growth rate of your remaining portfolio while you are withdrawing from it - often assumed lower, reflecting a more conservative allocation.
Tax & Other Considerations
