What This Expense Tracker Does

This tool helps you log every rupee you spend, sort it into 15 everyday categories (Food, Housing, Transport, EMI, and more), and see exactly where your money is going each month. Beyond simple logging, it includes a Budget Planner where you can compare your spending against two standard budgeting principles (50-30-20 and 60-20-20) for reference, build your own custom budget with your own category percentages, and track a live Budget Health Score that reflects your actual behaviour โ€” not just a plan on paper. You can also import transactions directly from a bank or UPI statement (CSV or PDF) instead of typing each one in by hand.

Who Should Use This

This is built for Indian salaried professionals who want a clear, honest picture of their monthly spending โ€” especially if you've ever reached the end of a month wondering where your salary went. It's equally useful if you're just starting to budget for the first time, trying to build a habit of tracking daily UPI/GPay/PhonePe spending, preparing for a big financial goal (a home loan, a wedding, an emergency fund), or simply want to know if your spending habits are sustainable before your next salary hike or EMI commitment.

How the Budget Health Score Works

Your score out of 100 is built from four equally-weighted pillars, each based on your actual spending this month โ€” not just the numbers in your plan:

Savings Rate (25 pts) โ€” money actually invested this month รท income
Spending Discipline (25 pts) โ€” share of your budgeted categories where real spending stayed within budget
Debt / EMI Load (25 pts) โ€” actual EMI payments this month รท income
Budget Completeness (25 pts) โ€” whether your budget is filled out sensibly and covers your essential categories

A pretty-looking budget plan with zero real tracking won't score well โ€” the score only rewards what you actually did, which is what makes it useful rather than decorative.

Example Calculation

Say your monthly income is โ‚น80,000 and you've built a custom budget allocating 20% (โ‚น16,000) to Investments/SIP and 25% (โ‚น20,000) to Housing:

You actually invest โ‚น16,000 this month โ†’ Savings Rate = 20% of income โ†’ full 25 points
You spend โ‚น15,000 on rent (within the โ‚น20,000 budgeted) โ†’ this category counts as "on track"
You have no EMI payments this month โ†’ Debt/EMI Load pillar โ†’ full 25 points
Your budget covers all your essential "needs" categories and adds up to 100% โ†’ strong Completeness score
Result: a high, honestly-earned Budget Health Score

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Setting a budget and never logging real expenses against it. A plan on paper doesn't tell you anything about your actual habits โ€” the tracking is where the insight comes from.

Lumping every UPI payment into "Miscellaneous." Vague categorization hides exactly the patterns you're trying to catch โ€” a โ‚น300 "misc" charge tells you nothing, but "Dining Out" adding up to โ‚น6,000 this month tells you something actionable.

Copying a textbook percentage (like 50-30-20) without adjusting it to your real life. Someone paying off a home loan or supporting family will naturally look different from the standard split โ€” use the reference rules for comparison, not as a rulebook you must match exactly.

Ignoring small recurring expenses. A โ‚น49 subscription or a โ‚น150 daily coffee habit feels invisible day-to-day but adds up to thousands over a month โ€” these are exactly what a category-level view catches that memory alone won't.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my expense data private?+
Yes. Everything you log, and any statement you import, is stored only in your own browser on your own device โ€” nothing is uploaded to FinZfun's servers or anywhere else.
Will my data be there if I come back tomorrow?+
Yes, as long as you use the same browser on the same device and don't clear your browser's site data. Since nothing is saved to an account or server, switching devices or browsers means starting fresh.
What's the difference between the reference budgeting rules and my own budget?+
The 50-30-20 and 60-20-20 cards are fixed, textbook percentages shown purely for comparison โ€” you can't edit them. "Your Budget" is the one you build yourself, category by category, and it's the only one that drives your Health Score and tracking.
Can I track more than one budget at a time?+
You can save up to 3 different budgets (for example, a normal month and a tighter month) and switch between them any time, but only one is "active" and tracked against your real spending at a time.
Why is my Health Score low even though my budget looks fine?+
The score is based on your actual logged spending this month, not just your plan. If you haven't logged much yet, or if real spending is going over budget in a few categories, the score reflects that honestly rather than assuming the best.
What file formats can I import for statements?+
CSV exports are the most reliable, since bank and UPI apps format them consistently. PDF statements are also supported on a best-effort basis, but layouts vary a lot between providers, so always review the parsed transactions before confirming an import.
